Women of the Word: the Woman Who Was Crippled

woman-who-was-crippled-wotw

One Sabbath, Jesus the Christ was teaching in a synagogue when He spotted a woman in the listening crowd. This woman was a cripple. Luke 13:11 says “she was bent over and could not straighten up at all,” and she had been this way for eighteen long years.

If you know anything about Jesus, you know that He couldn’t let this woman remain in the state she was in any longer. When He saw her, He put His teaching on pause, called her forward, and said, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” Then Jesus put His hands on her, and the woman was immediately healed. Her body straightened up. Her bent disappeared. She could walk with her back upright and her head held high.

Imagine how incredible it must have been for her to have been set free in less than eight minutes after being bound for eighteen years. The woman, however, didn’t just rush to enjoy the newfound freedom she had in her limbs. When she saw that she was no longer a cripple, her first reaction was to praise God. Besides this, what other things can we learn from the woman who was crippled? (more…)

Faith of Our Fairy Tales #16 (Original story / photo)

Story Scripture: The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. – Deuteronomy 31:8

Story Saying: When we face difficulties, we sometimes forget God’s past faithfulness. We see only the detours and the dangerous path. But look back and you will also see the joy of victory, the challenge of the climb, and the presence of your traveling Companion who has promised never to leave you nor forsake you. – Author Unknown

Behind the Story: Here is yet another popular fairy tale that nearly everyone has heard more than once. There are many different variations of this story, but I particularly love the original because it features a house made of sweets with windows of clear sugar. How delicious! What imagination! But it is not without a bit of darkness. I remember the first time my youngest brother and sister watched a cartoon version of Hansel and Grethel and they were so frightened of the ugly witch with her crooked nose zooming back and forth on a broom and cackling about her plans to stuff the poor children in an oven and roast them whole. The horror! But before we get to the witch, there are a few things we can learn from the other characters. (more…)

Women of the Word: Possessed Slave Girl

Chapter 16 of Acts tells of an interesting event that took place during one of the apostles’ many mission trips. In verses 16-19, Paul and his companions were going merrily on their way to prayer when a young girl interrupted them. The Bible reads: “A certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, ‘These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.'”

Is good greater than or equal to evil? Does Satan have enough power to defeat God?

Ethical dualism asserts that there are two mutually hostile forces in the world – the one being the source of all good, the other the source of all evil. Both of these forces are equal in power. In “Christian” dualism especially, God and His angels represent the good side while Satan and his demons represent the evil side. (more…)

Women of the Word: Medium at En Dor

Monday, March 3rd, 2014

The woman we are looking at today was no ordinary woman. She was, in fact, a medium. A medium is defined as a person claiming to be in contact with the spirits of the dead and to communicate between the dead and the living. Today we would call her a necromancer, psychic, or more simply, a witch. The medium’s story is told in 1 Samuel 28:7-25 and she is mentioned again in 1 Chronicles 10:13.
