Women of the Word: Woman Who Lifted Up Her Voice

Thursday, July 6th, 2017

Jesus taught many crowds about many spiritual matters during His time on earth. During one such instance, He was teaching on prayer and then about Beelzebul. As He was speaking, Luke 11:27-28 says that a woman lifted up her voice and called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”

What was Jesus’ response?

He said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

Was the woman wrong to consider Mary, the mother of Jesus, blessed? No, not at all, for Mary was indeed blessed. In Luke 1:39-45, the mother of John the Baptist, Elizabeth, is the first to proclaim Mary’s blessedness. “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!” she says. “Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

In His response to the woman, Jesus was not correcting her words or denying them or rebuking them. Rather, He was improving upon them. He gave her, and all who were listening, a more accurate understanding of why one would be blessed and what it means to be blessed.

Jesus’ Birth from a Dog’s Perspective

Monday, December 26th, 2016

Here is a short story that the little sister, Danyelle, wrote for Christmas. Enjoy!

The shining stars twinkled down on the stable in Bethlehem.

But, look! Another star shone, much bigger and brighter.

Below in the stable, crowded with sheep and lowing oxen, a shepherd’s dog lay by the door, ears perked to the cries of a woman giving birth.

Is she in pain? the dog thought.

Little did he know, he was witnessing the Greatest Thing! In an instant, a beautiful Little Baby Boy was in the woman’s arms. But Mary, His mother, knew He was not Little. He was LARGER THAN LIFE. HE WAS LIFE!

“A Baby! A Baby!” The dog leapt up and ran in circles. He’d only seen his master’s baby girl before. But this Lovely Baby created him. This Baby Boy created the bright star, set in the sky. He created Mary, Joseph, the sheep, the shepherds and the wise men.

Women of the Word: Jesus’ Sisters

Wednesday, August 17th, 2016

It might come as a surprise, but Jesus wasn’t an only child in His earthly family. He is the only begotten Son of God, but while growing up with Mary and Joseph, Jesus had several siblings. Matthew 13:55-56 and Mark 6:3 both make reference to Jesus’ brothers and sisters. His four brothers are mentioned by name, James, Joseph, Simon and Judas (no relation to Jesus’ disciples), but His sisters remain unnamed and unnumbered. We don’t know how many there were, what they were called, or anything else about them. What we do know is that these girls had a big brother who is the Savior of the world. And we have a few things in common with them because: (more…)

What? Why? Which? 210 Questions Jesus Asked

Monday, September 14th, 2015

When Jesus was here on earth, He asked A LOT of questions. Being fully human, it would have been weird for Him never to ask anyone anything. But since He was also fully God, I guess it’s safe to say that all His questions were rhetorical because He already knew the answers to them. He questioned His parents (Why were you searching for me? Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?). He questioned His disciples (You of little faith, why are you so afraid?). He even questioned God (My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?).

Below are 210 questions asked by Jesus the Christ Himself:

Women of the Word: the Woman With the Flow of Blood

Wednesday, February 11th, 2015

Matthew 9:20-23 and Luke 8:43-48 details the story of how a woman was healed by touching the hem of Jesus’ garment. The Bible says this woman had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her livelihood on physicians but could not be healed by any. Today, the woman’s sickness is known as a hemorrhage which is a condition in which a person bleeds too much and cannot stop the flow of blood.
